World Waterfowl Callmakers Championship Contest – 2019

The art of making a duck or goose call — the small musical instrument that hunters have used for centuries — has a very storied and is a deeply rooted tradition. It is said to be one of the oldest art forms for attracting waterfowl and, today, is a multi-million dollar industry. While this hunter’s tool is simple in form, making a call that truly sounds like a goose or a specific duck species takes a master craftsperson.

Waterfowl Festival is pleased to host the World Waterfowl Callmakers Championship contest, featuring some of today’s most recognized, custom call makers from across the United States. Introduced last year as a natural complement to the World Waterfowl Calling Contest, judges evaluate three categories of duck and goose calls and one category of “whistles” based on ten criteria including fit (how they feel) and finish (how they look) and of course, the most important criteria, the quality of their sound. The calls entered into the contest can be made from different kinds of materials and are done in a variety of styles.

We continue to come up with new ways to showcase our region’s history and find ways to better connect today’s living arts with our region’s waterfowling heritage. Visitors can check out the beauty and details of entrants’ calls all weekend in the Callmakers Tent at the Sportsman Pavilion. While the judging takes place Thursday, winners will be announced Saturday afternoon during the World Waterfowl Calling Contest.

So come by the Callmakers Tent early to blow the calls and see if you have an ear for the ones with the perfect waterfowl sound!
