Waterfowling ArtifactsHere one can trace the evolution of waterfowling from an economic necessity to the sport of today. Items date back to the mid-nineteenth century. Private collections of decoys, guns, gunning boats, and accoutrements from our waterfowling past date back to the mid-nineteenth century. In conjunction with the dedication of this year's Festival to the late Dr. Harry Walsh, an extraordinary exhibit will be on display at the Artifacts Exhibit. Author of the book The Outlaw Gunner, Dr. Walsh amassed a huge collection of hunting artifacts and paraphernalia while researching the book and during his own hunting years. At the first Festivals, his pieces formed the core of the early Artifacts exhibits. He later donated most of his collection to museums, including the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Museum and Mariner's Museum in Virginia. A special selection of pieces from his collection are on loan to the Festival this year including a sink box gunning platform, a sneak skiff, battery gun, punt gun and much more. This collection is exclusive to this year only - don't miss it! |
