Debra Howard

Hometown: Crisfield, Maryland

Debra has been an artist and adventurer her entire life. Dissatisfied with a career in advertising, she provisioned her sailboat, with art supplies, her daughter and dog and began cruising. After almost 27 years of sailing and painting, she has come ashore and turned her creative focus to painting the Eastern Shore. She arrived on Tangier Island, a tiny 400 year old community in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, in 2009 to accept the position of Artist-in-Residence. Her work was featured in The American Scholar Magazine. Debra is an award winning plein-air artist known for her distinctive color palette and strong brush work. She is currently the AIR at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
